Day 4 - Trip to North Iceland

Next day, as we started backing out of the lodging parking lot, we scraped the car and caused some damage to the car. Thankfully, we had some good insurance, but we would still have to pay some money. We went and bought some duct tape and taped the part that was ripped.

Today, we are headed north to Akureyri, the second biggest city in Iceland. Its a five hour drive and there is not much to see, but we still planned a lunch stop at Kolugljufur Gorge, which is supposed to be beautiful.

Fairly soon after we set out, we had the second mishap of the day. We got a flat tire ! The Route 54 road was not that great- full of gravel and pebbles. I was really bummed. But Alex was not perturbed at all - he used it as an opportunity to teach Neel and Satto how to change tires.

We took all the luggage out.

It was really deserted out there and there were no passers-bys or cars.

The kids worked on getting the flat tire out.

The tire was replaced with the spare one in the car trunk and we drove to a nearby city where we found a mechanic shop to fix the flat tire,

We all had lunch while waiting for the car tire to get repaired. It was good we packed a lunch. Do note that in Iceland, you can find decent food at gas stations. Once car was repaired, we profusely thanked the mechanic, paid him and headed out to our next stop - Kolugljufur Gorge.

We had to go through what looked like a private property/farm to get there. It had a gorgeous waterfall and the canyon was amazing.

Not many know about this and so this place was not crowded at all.

By evening, we got to the guesthouse we were staying at near Akuryeri.
It had a gorgeous view over a fjord.

We walked down to a restaurant nearby. Alex wanted to try the famous Icelandic Fish Soup, but they were already out.

The food in Iceland, even though expensive, was always very fresh and flavorful.
